    James, I’m a pretty big guy too, I’m 6’4” and was at 225. Dropping to 195 made my runs so much easier. I can’t believe how hard it used to be on higher mileage and now I cruise through what I used to struggle with.

    Growing up as a competitive swimmer, breath work was always a focus. I haven't swam consistently for over 17 years, but during any cardio I still habitually breathe like I'm swimming, and it makes a huge difference. My preferred cardio these days is HIIT training on a stationary bike, and no matter how hard I push, my heart rate stays relatively low, and my breathing is slow and controlled. I also practice combat sports, and I find I am able to continue at a moderate pace as long as I need to, or at least until my arms/legs give out. Breath is never the limiting factor, and I attribute that to learning to breathe properly for swimming.

    I really enjoy this channel and the advice is excellent but, somehow, much of it just doesn’t reflect my own experience. I’m now 71 and I’ve been running as a method of maintaining fitness for well over 40 years. The trouble is that before I owned a running watch I had no idea about cadence or stride length, just time and distance (estimated at that). Since I’ve owned a running watch I’ve discovered that my cadence is 188-190 no matter what speed I’m running. I can look back to several years ago when I was running quickly compared to now (sub two hour half marathons) and my cadence was 188. 5 years ago my running really dropped off and I was running 12 minutes miles. Again 188 cadence. Now I’ve improved again and am running inside 10 minute miles. Same cadence. To be clear, I can see from my charts that I do increase cadence at certain points, such as to speed up or go uphill, but then I settle back so the average is maintained. Just realised I’ve commented on the earlier video I was watching to do with running form.

  • @TomK32
    @TomK32 7 дней назад

    In addition to the pace and hear rate, I think it's also important at the start to keep a close eye on the stride length and cadence. Get those right early and you are less prone to injury.

I, through trial and error, corrected my posture and that made my running so much better. I found that pulling my shoulders back made my posture better and more in line as per the video and running changed overnight. Will now be trying the rest of the techniques in this video. Thanks.

    The technique depends somewhat on the speed/distance; The optimum technique is different for a 100 meter sprint, a 5 km on a track, a road marathon and a 100 mile ultra in the mountains...

    • @arkamukhopadhyay9111
      @arkamukhopadhyay9111 6 дней назад

      However, it is not different for different road distances, or different track distances between 1,500 and 10,000.

    • @JamesDunne
      @JamesDunne 10 дней назад

      One of my main issues with the book is the suggestion that switching from heel strike to forefoot will reduce injuries. There's just no good body of research to back-up that kind of bold statement. At most it changes the types of running injury you're likely to sustain. This paper is a good read: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6189005/ And as for barefoot running being a sensible approach to sustainable running... come on! 🙈 As far as elite heel strikers are concerned, look up Shura Kitata :)

      Its because there are two ways to think about it. 1. The biomechanical most efficient way. (Which can change depending on your specific biology) 2. The motor program in your brain. When you shift running form it takes time for your brain to catch up - So even though you might be running biomechanically better, in the beginning it will be harder until the brain catches up. I hope that helps.

    It's not cadence, all y'all idiots in the run world and cycling world have bastardized the word cadence. You mean tempo. beats per minute, steps per minute. revolutions per minute. That isn't cadence. There are sooo many of you idiots now that websters recognizes it but you are still wrong. Just like the word ain't. You are idiots. It comes from music theory and you are ALL wrong. Use the correct terminology.
